Temporary Street Closure April 17, 2024

There will be a temporary street closure of E Jefferson St from S State St to N Sherman St on Wednesday, April 17 (weather permitting) so contractor can trench for a new water service line for the EMS/Fire Building project. Work is anticipated to be completed and the street reopened within the same day. Thank you for your attention and support for this project. Any questions please contact City Hall at 515-994-2649.

Hydrant Flushing scheduled to begin next week, April 15, 2024

4/15/2024 **UPDATE IN SCHEDULE** In an effort to prevent unnecessary water loss, Public Works has taken the water tower offline to be cleaned on Tuesday April 16th prior to flushing hydrants, which will now likely begin on Thursday April 18th after the tower has been refilled.

4/11/24 NOTICE – Please see the Hydrant Flushing Schedule Map and the Street Group Listing for details on when each area within the city will be affected. It is recommended during the hydrant flushing process that residents do not wash white clothes as it can cause stains and it is recommended to withhold washing whites for a few days after flushing is completed. Public Works staff plans on starting next Monday April 15, 2024 and should be done by April 26th. If the schedule changes, a notice will be posted.

Library Grand Opening scheduled

The Grand Opening of Prairie City Public Library’s new location at 100 S Marshall Street will be held Saturday, April 13th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. The ribbon cutting will take place at 10:00 am. The public is invited to the celebration!

Water Main Construction Begins Week of April 8, 2024

MB Construction will be starting construction of the 8” Water Main at N Sherman St. and E Jefferson St. the week of April 8, 2024.

Residents and businesses will continue to have access to driveways throughout the project. However, parking on the street is discouraged during construction.

City Requests Nationwide Lead Service Line Inventory Assistance

To meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements regarding the nationwide private Lead Service Line Inventory, the City Public Works department will be sending a mailer to all residents and businesses requesting your assistance in identifying the type of water pipe extending to your dwelling or building and located throughout the dwelling or building by completing information on the reverse side of the mailer and returning it to City Hall located at 203 E Jefferson St by Friday, March 29, 2024. Residents and business owners may also use the other response options identified in the mailer to communicate the type of pipe material in your dwelling or building to the city by the deadline.

MidAmerican Vegetation Management

In order to provide Prairie City with safe and reliable electric service, contracted tree trimming crews working for MidAmerican Energy Company will be clearing tree limbs from our electric facilities in our community. The area where the work will be performed is shown on the attached map. MidAmerican has also provided a tree trim brochure for review.

This work is tentatively scheduled to begin within the next week. Approximately two days prior to trimming, all affected properties will receive a courtesy telephone call.  Immediately before work begins, crews will knock on the door of the affected property and explain what work is needed.  

Open House February 29, 2024 to discuss upcoming water projects.

Letters are being mailed to city residents regarding an Open House to discuss the plans for the Phase 2 water project and the Sherman St and Jefferson St water project. The open house is Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 5-7pm at the Community Building and hosted by City staff and MSA Engineering staff. Questions should be directed to City Hall at 515-994-2649.
