HomeServe and Service Line Warranties and City of Prairie City Partnership

The City of Prairie City teamed up with HomeServe and affiliated Service Line Warranties to offer private water and sanitary sewer repair services directly to residents. HomeServe’s program is also supported by the Iowa League of Cities and the National League of Cities.

Residents in Prairie City will be contacted soon directly by HomeServe via a letter in the mail and will have the opportunity to enter into a service agreement directly with HomeServe to address potential needed future repairs to broken or leaking private water and sanitary sewer lines located outside of the dwelling that residents are responsible for.

Key Program features include the following:

  1. The service agreement is between residents and HomeServe.
  2. Residents pay a monthly fee for potential future needed repairs to their water and sanitary sewer lines outside of the dwelling.
  3. If the resident’s issue is covered, the program pays up to $8500 per occurrence.
  4. Customers are provided with a 24/7/365 repair phone line staffed with live agents.
  5. All repairs are performed by local licensed and insured contractors in accordance with City regulations.

Please contact City Hall staff with any additional questions about the HomeServe program at 515-994-2649.

CIT Sewer Solutions work within the city continues.

CIT Sewer Solutions has been hired by the City Council to evaluate and repair some of the City’s sanitary sewer mains. Within the next few days, they will tentatively be working in the following areas:

W North St from N Park St to N Orchard St

Alleyway from N Sherman St to N East St

Part of this work involves the use of high-pressure water sprayed to clean the areas where private sewer lines connect to the City’s sanitary sewer main, prior to doing the repairs. This water pressure may cause increased pressure to private sewer lines and connected items including household drains, sinks, showers, tubs and toilets. Residents are advised as a precaution to keep toilet lids closed and cover drain opens during this cleaning and repair period.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project. Please contact City Hall regarding any questions about this project at 515-994-2649.

Updated – Water Main Repair 8/2/2023 am

Update – the repair has been completed.

Public Works is currently working on an issue with the water main on W 8th Street. Residents in the area on N Claire Street and W 8th Street may experience low water pressure during the repair. It is estimated this will take about an hour.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please keep grass clippings off the streets.

Grass clippings that land on driveways, sidewalks, and roads often are washed into storm drains and end up in local lakes and streams adding excessive nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen which can lead to greater production of algae and aquatic weeds and poorer water quality. Grass clippings are also a hazard for bikers. When mowing, please mow in directions that result in the grass clippings staying on the lawn instead of driveways, sidewalks, trails, and roads.

This practice is also a requirement of City Ordinance 135.03: It is unlawful for any person to throw or deposit on any street or alley any glass, glass bottle, nails, tacks, wire, cans, trash, garbage, rubbish, litter, offal, leaves, grass or any other debris likely to be washed into the storm sewer and clog the storm sewer, or any substance likely to injure any person, animal, or vehicle.
